Exam Format and Content
The ATMAE Lean Six Sigma exam is comprehensive and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, each worth 1 point, and 25 multiple-choice questions, each requiring the examinee to solve a production or statistical problem. These questions are more complex and are worth 4 points each. Examinees are allowed to use printed reference materials during the exam, but Internet and software-based references are prohibited.

Upon completion of the exam, candidates can earn one of the following belt distinctions based on their score:

- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt: 80% or higher
- Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt: 80% or higher, plus completion of required projects
For those aiming for the Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, additional requirements must be met:
- Submit a completed Lean Six Sigma project and one from an individual they are assisting.
- Projects must be pre-approved by the ATMAE Certification Board and completed within three years of approval.
- A financial statement and supervisor approval are also required. An additional fee is charged for project review.
