Wesley S. Sommers

Born 11 September 1925, Brooklyn, New York. Diploma, Licensed Third Assistant Marine Engineer, Commissioned Ensign, United States Naval Reserve, New York State Maritime Academy, 1945; Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, University of Michigan, 1950; Teaching Certificate in Industrial Education, Mathematics, and Science, University of Michigan, 1951; Master of Arts, Industrial Education, University of Michigan, 1955; Doctor of Philosophy in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Production Management, University of Minnesota, 1961.

Retired from the University of Wisconsin-Stout as Professor and Assistant Chancellor for Administrative Services, 1971-1989; Assistant to the President, 1969-1971; Administrator of the School of Home Economics, 1968-1969; Special Assistant to the President, 1967-1968; Chair of the Industrial Technology Department, 1956-1967; teacher of Industrial Arts courses, Cadillac High School, Cadillac, Michigan, 1951-1956.

Related educational work experiences include instructor in the Creative Problem Solving Institute, University of Buffalo, New York; Instructor, University of Minnesota; Research Assistant, University of Minnesota; and Training Director, United States Naval Reserve Surface Division, Cadillac, Michigan.

Professional memberships include the National and Central Associations of College and University Business Officers, American Industrial Arts Association, American Council of Industrial Arts Teacher Education, American and Upper Mid-West Associations for Institutional Research, National Association of Industrial Technology (Charter First Vice-President), American Society for Engineering Education, and the University of Wisconsin System Research Council.

Honorary Society memberships include Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Pi Tau, Quarterdeck Society (Naval Architect Society), Creative Leadership Council, and Creative Education Foundation.

Professional publications include two books: Creative Design for the Industrial Arts Teacher, The Minnesota Plan for Industrial Arts Teacher Education; professional articles published in School Shop, The Industrial Arts Teacher ,The American Vocational Journal, Industrial Arts and Vocational Education, and The American Council on Industrial Arts Education Yearbook.

Selected professional activities include Minnesota State Fair Judge, panel member for the Minnesota Industrial Education Association, and speaker at Wisconsin, Ohio, National Association of Industrial Technology conferences, workshops/short courses in Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, Canada, Georgia, Nebraska, Colorado, California, Kansas, Virginia, and Missouri.
